In 1984 she was co-chair of Jesse Jackson's presidential campaign. When longtime Democratic Congressman Augustus Hawkins retired in 1990.
Maxine Waters born Maxine Moore Carr August 15 1938 is a Democratic member of the United States House of Representatives since 1991 representing California's 35th congressional district.She resides in the Hancock Park area of Los Angeles which is approximately six miles west of downtown. She is the most senior of the 12 African American women currently serving in the United States Congress.
