Lou Piniella Managed World Series Upset Victory

Filled under:

Piniella reassumed managerial duties for the rest of 1988. Piniella then managed the Reds from 1990 to 1992, leading the team to the World Series and an upset victory over the heavily favored Oakland Athletics in 1990. Between 1993 and 2002, Piniella managed the Mariners, earning himself Manager of the Year honors in 1995 and 2001, but no World Series appearances.

It was like one of those before-and-after comparisons we see every time a president leaves office paler, grayer, with more furrows in the forehead and bags under the eyes and Piniella had served the equivalent of only one term. But the Cubs have that effect on a lot of people.

He is spent 18 years as a player before Mike Quade will manage the Cubs. Quade was formerly the team’s third base coach. All the other coaches will remain the same for the rest of the season. However, at the end of the season, expect the 51-74 Cubs to make wholesale changes.
