Pakistan, submerging tens of thousands of square miles, killing about 1,500 people and leaving millions homeless, those flood waters are still sweeping downriver and through the south, adding one more layer of misery to people long accustomed to hardship.

Aerial monitoring is being conducted, and it has shown that whole villages have washed away, animals have drowned and grain storages have washed away, said Latifur Rehman, spokesman for the Provincial Disaster Management Authority. The destruction is massive.

As many as 8.5 million people in Punjab have been affected, and property damage is in the hundreds of millions of dollars, the chief minister, Shahbaz Sharif, told reporters. Punjab’s provincial cabinet met Tuesday and ordered development funds to be used for emergency aid.
