Competitors from New Orleans have won six out of the last eight National Championships, including the 2003 event. While Marblehead sailors have hardly been shutout Jud Smith won the 2006 Rhodes 19 Nationals in Rockport, and Charlie Pendleton and Jim Raisides won the 2008 title in New Bedford  and no team wants to be beaten on its home turf. the swan-necked beauty was taught to lie by Charles de Beistegui, learned to be herself from Diana Vreeland, and has reigned at the nexus of French fashion, finance, culture, and society ever since. Chronicling de Ribes’s six decades of haut monde iconoclasm, the author learns why no label could ever fit such a dazzlingly inventive talent.

Lane pointed out that Peter Sladovich [New Orleans] has a solid record in the boat, and is comfortable in the front of the pack, while newcomers to the regatta like [Ben] Richardson and [Colin] Santangelo have also shown a knack for consistent single-digit finishes even in large fleets like those at Race Week.Richardson, an internationally-ranked Laser sailor who mounted 2000 and 2004 Summer Olympics campaigns and represented the United States in the 2003 Pan Am Games, made his presence known to the Marblehead Rhodes fleet during Sailing World’s National Offshore One Design Regatta at Marblehead Race Week last month.

It was the first time that Richardson competed in a Rhodes regatta, although he has sailed the boat casually since the 90s.An exotic vision, the aristocratic beauty was swaddled from the pinnacle of her tasseled hat to the tips of her pointed slippers in a fantastically opulent Turkish disguise, ingeniously cobbled together by the Vicomtesse herself from three of her old haute couture dresses; organza lamé from a remnant market; and a sable cape, acquired from an impoverished ballerina. Recalls de la Renta, “It was a show. And she was the star. No one knew like Jacqueline the power of an entrance.”

Similar to Richardson, those results were impacted by not being able to complete all of the races on the first day. Winds gusting over 20 miles per hour caused a broach that swamped the cockpit, but Santangelo and his crew recovered quickly to get a second in the next race.According to the event organizers, the list of out-of-towners to watch also includes South Dartmouth’s Ike Babbitt, who finished fourth in the recent Rhodes 19 East Coast Championships and Peter Sladovich, 2007 Rhodes 19 National Champion from New Orleans, who is most likely chomping at the bit to win again after finishing second the past two years.
