Crowe, the Oscar-winning writer of Almost Famous, hasn't directed film since Elizabethtown way back in 2005 and while it hasn't officially been announced that he's helming this one, the guys over at ComingSoon.net have unearthed some interesting details that seem to indicate Crowe will be sitting in the director's chair once filming begins. The first piece of evidence was yesterday's announcement that the film will open on December 23rd, 2011. This doesn't necessarily mean Crowe would be directing, but setting a release date for the project would seem to indicate that someone has been or is close to being hired for the job. Christmas is where movies with high expectations open and seems a perfect slot.

Celebrity Mercury has been a cherished member of the Celebrity family since she entered service in 1997, and has offered countless guests outstanding vacation experiences," said Celebrity President & CEO Dan Hanrahan. "We are dedicated to offering the same impeccable service our brand is known for right up until the ship transitions to TUI Cruises, and we are confident that the ship's future with TUI Cruises is very bright."

Hanrahan also noted that Mercury's crew doesn't have to worry about job security: "With the rapid growth and momentum of the Celebrity brand, and the fourth member of our five-ship Solstice Class fleet, Celebrity Silhouette, launching in July 2011, we have abundant opportunities for the fine crew on Celebrity Mercury to transfer to another Celebrity ship."

If past precedent also applies (viz: Celebrity Galaxy), at least some of Mercury's outstanding art collection might also end up reinstalled on other, new Celebrity ships. One wonders, though, at the fate of some site-specific pieces that were created especially for Mercury. The Lawrence Weiner text pieces "Wine Poured Upon the Sea" and "Bread Cast Upon the Waters," for instance, were applied directly to walls in the atrium and near the spa, and a large wave-themed mural by Sol LeWitt forms a full wall of the Martini Bar.

Mercury will continue sailing her previously announced cruises for Celebrity through her February 14, 2011, sailing. Guests booked on cruises after that date will have the option of cancelling their booking or transferring it to an earlier Mercury sailing from Baltimore between October 18, 2010, and February 2011 (Christmas cruise excepted). Guests who take the latter route will get a small onboard credit for their troubles: $75 per stateroom for inside or ocean-view cabins, $100 for veranda or Concierge Class, and $200 per suite.

After she completes her service with Celebrity, Mercury will undergo about two months of reconstruction and refurbishment to transform her into Mein Schiff 2, gaining additional cabin verandas, an expanded spa and fitness area, a teen bar, and many new design elements. She'll debut for TUI in May 2011, sailing in the Baltic and Scandinavia.
