Gugu, short for Gugulethu, Xhosa for "Our Pride", was born in the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, England to South African doctor Patrick Mbatha and his wife, nurse Anne Raw. Her parents separated when she was a year old, though she is still close to her father, and she was brought up by her mother in the town of Witney.Gugu Mbatha-Raw was born in 1983 in Oxford, England. Her first name is short for Gugulethu, which is Zulu for “our pride”. She was raised in Witney, Oxfordshire (sounds like a place out of the Lord of the Rings). At a young age she discovered her passion for acting and actively pursued it.
The time she was 11-years-old she was already appearing in plays at the Oxford Playhouse. Not only is she an outstanding actress, but she was also blessed with musical ability too.Gugu Mbatha-Raw co-stars opposite of Boris Kodjoe in J.J. Abrams latest action packed thriller ‘Undercovers’, for which the season premiere (season 1 episode 1) aired tonight. I bet you don’t know the powerful meaning of the beautiful British actresses’ name, but you can find out along with much more interesting info about her (including photos and video) and the show below.
I was on Broadway when I first got the initial audition," Gugu said. "I didn't really know much about the project because it was very top secret."She took part in an early audition, but unaware that her test had piqued the interest of the top brass, the Oxford-born actress was actually away in a picturesque locale when she got the big call."I went off to Egypt on a yoga holiday," she explained. "I was in Egypt, under a palm tree, and I get a call from my manager saying, 'They want you in LA tomorrow to read for the lead part'I managed to get back to London and then back to LA in a couple of days. So yeah, it's been a very weird and wonderful journey."
