A former teammate, had died that day in East Hanover. The popular 17-year-old had worn No. 30 when he played in the program as a freshman and sophomore.Last night, each Bloomfield player also wore those digits, but as a helmet sticker to honor the young man.Two of his closest friends from the squad, senior quarterback Cavan Penberthy and senior tight end Joe Finkler, did further honor to Mason by spearheading a steady offense that sent Bloomfield to a 28-7 victory over Belleville in Belleville.
Penberthy completed seven of 10 passes for 138 yards and a touchdown, a 5-yarder to Finkler in the fourth quarter, and Finkler hauled in four passes for 117 yards. Senior Doug Collins paced the ground attack with 18 carries for 76 yards and two touchdowns.It was tough because he (Penberthy) and I grew up with the kid. We just wanted to play this way to honor him,’’ Finkler said. He also came up with three tackles and a sack at linebacker and Penberthy was in on eight tackles from his safety spot to lead a defense that limited Belleville to 137 total yards.
But to play as crisply as Bloomfield did, it had to fight through raw emotions all week in school and practice. The wake was Wednesday and the funeral Thursday morning.It made us stronger as a team and we’re just gonna build on that,’’ Penberthy said. ``We think about all the great memories we had with Mike, but we can’t dwell on it. He wouldn’t want us to. He’d want us to come together more like a family than ever.Belleville paid its respects at the wake and stunned Bloomfield coach Mike Carter with such a large group.
