This time around, they amount to 85 percent.Are American employers meaner than their European counterparts and American forebears? I doubt it. The difference is that American workers have markedly less power than their European counterparts and their American forebears.

On the fourth spot there is "The Last Exorcism" which drops two places from last weekend. The horror movie adds an estimated $7.6 million to its domestic revenue. Another newcomer "Going the Distance" rounds up the top five with an approximately $6.9 million gross. The Hollywood Reporter had predicted that this Robert Rodriguez's R-rated action thriller would lose to "The American" because the George Clooney-starring flick attracts more couples on date night than the gory genre film.

It has come to be recognized in the U.S. not only as a celebration of the working class, but even more so as the unofficial end of the summer season. In the northern half of the U.S. at least, the summer vacation season begins with Memorial Day and ends with Labor Day.Many colleges and some secondary and elementary schools begin classes immediately after Labor Day.

This is interesting because Cleveland was not a labor union supporter. In fact, he was trying to repair some political damage that he suffered earlier that year when he sent federal troops to put down a strike by the American Railway Union at the Pullman Co. in Chicago, IL. That action resulted in the deaths of 34 workers.
