Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! We’ll be taking the rest of the week off to go eat turkey and hit some of the amazing sales — keep an eye on the @corporettedeals Twitter stream (also on the right-hand sidebar of the site) for any good deals we hear about.

This weekend will be about family, friends, and — of course — shopping some sales, which requires good walking shoes. My shoe of choice: the eminently wearable, easily slip-off-able Converse All-Star. I like this “gothic grape” (pictured), but it’s also available in yellow, cranberry, “deep forest” green, the lighter “piquant green,” “raspberry rose,” “rust” orange, and “skydiver blue.” I particularly like that Zappos has them on sale at the moment — they were $45, now $36. Mark Weatherby, general manager of Border's Books at Nut Tree on East Monte Vista Avenue, said electronics, specifically eReaders capable of downloading books from the Internet, "are emerging as the biggest items." They range in price from $100 to $300. The store also carries books, DVDs, some CDs, candy, calendars, magazines and assorted gifts.

Will Black Friday be his best day?

"It's really difficult to tell," Weatherby said. "There's been some earlier shopping and there'll be some later shopping. I do think there are going to be a lot of sales. That last week is going to be crazy."

Calling himself "optimistic," Ted Neima, co-owner of Clipper Cargo on Merchant Street, a purveyor of costume and fine jewelry, some antiques, gold and silver coins and collectible currency, said, "A lot of merchants are doing innovative sales" and marketing with mailers and fliers.

One of his mailers noted that diamonds, rubies and pearls set in gold -- "and most of our costume jewelry," he said -- will be 20 percent off.

"We're looking forward to a very good holiday season for retail," said Neima, adding that his hopes are based, in part, on customer loyalty and service.
