Prince William and Kate Middleton Marriage Ceremony and after that

Filled under:

On her first morning as a married woman, the Duchess of Cambridge may well have found herself awakened in a suite at Buckingham Palace by the skirl of bagpipes. It is one of many quaint but abstruse royal traditions – every day the Queen's Piper plays for 15 minutes beneath the Sovereign's quarters – that the newly minted member of the Royal family will have to get used to.

While much has been made of the pressures of instant global celebrity for the new Duchess, these pale somewhat when compared with the social hurdles she has to overcome inside the House of Windsor. A few come to mind: don't try to stroke any of the Queen's corgis, as she doesn't like it; at meal-times keep an eagle eye on the Duke of Edinburgh, because plates are cleared by servants once he has finished eating; when staying at Balmoral avoid certain paths used by other members of the family for their daily walks, and never sit on the chair once occupied by the late Queen Mary.

While the Duchess, a student of Lewis Carroll, may be amused by the idiosyncrasies of her in-laws, perhaps more disconcerting for her will be that she has now entered a looking-glass world where all and sundry are bowing and curtseying to her, calling her "Ma'am" and hanging on her every word.
